Best Value Web Hosting 2019

Last updated Nov 2019

Our No Nonsense approach

  • No generic or filler content.
  • We compare Shared, VPS, Dedicated and WP separately.
  • We expose the confusing pricing structure and show you the true cost.
  • We show you comparison tables of important features across all hosts.
  • We provide enough information for making your own decision.
  • We show you the ‘Best Value for Money’, not ‘best’ regardless of price.
  • No bias towards hosts with higher commission.

The bottom line

There is not a one big winner in web hosting, not a one Best Host.

Rather you get different Best Value depending on the Hosting Type you need, whether your emphasize is on the short-term value for the first 1 to 3 years or the long-term, drastic, price rise of renewal after the first payment cycle.

Different plans from different hosts rank high in different categories which is why we compare each Hosting Type separately. One should also consider how the value proposition changes when your business needs grow and you upgrade from one plan to another.

Managed VPS

(Jump to comparison)

There are 4 major hosting types: Shared, VPS, Dedicated and Cloud.
There are also 2 content oriented types: Managed WordPress and eCommerce.
Hosting Types differ in server properties and resources allotment for your your site.
Content Oriented Types can run on any Hosting Type from Shared to Dedicated and offer an installation and support that are dedicated to WordPress or eCommerce respectively.

Shared Hosting

  • A single server runs many sites, sometimes thousands .
  • Each account is allotted a slice of CPU power, RAM, disk space and bandwidth.
  • Separation and protection between accounts is limited so your site’s performance may degrade if another site is overusing its resources. Your site may also be compromised if another site is inflicted by a malicious attack.
  • You can only install and run certain software tools permitted by your host.
  • It is the most affordable hosting type.
  • It is all you need for a blog or a low traffic site.

Note: Some hosting companies use the term Cloud hosting when they really mean Shared hosting running in the cloud. The differences between running locally and running in the cloud are quit negligible as far as the end user is concerned. Real Cloud hosting refers to high end services like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google cloud and other similar services.

VPS Hosting - Virtual Private Server

  • VPS is the next tier above Shared.
  • You switch to VPS when you need the flexibility to install software that you can’t use with a Shared account.
  • A VPS does not necessarily mean better performance then Shared hosting. Expensive Shared hosting might be stronger than a Starter VPS.
  • You get your own server in software but it shares a physical server with other VPSs.
  • You share CPU, RAM, disk and bandwidth with other accounts but accounts are prevented from overusing their resources, therefor your performance is never compromised because of other VPSs.
  • Every VPS resides in its own sandbox therefor your site is not exposed to security issues on other VPSs.
  • You can install and run almost anything.
  • Having your own server means it is your responsibility to install, setup and maintain the server.
    • On a Non Managed VPS you get a bare bones machine and have to install, setup and maintain the Operating System (OS) and all the software your self. This requires a lot of IT knowledge. Up side, its somewhat cheaper and you get OS root access.
    • On a Managed VPS the host’s team takes care of many aspects of installation, setup and maintenance. You can usually control your system via cPanel but it is a little more costly and you don’t get root access to your machine.

Dedicated Hosting

  • A dedicated server is like running a single VPS on your own physical server.
  • It is the next tier above VPS.
  • You get your own physical server. You share nothing with others.
  • All other features are just like a VPS,

Managed WordPress Hosting

  • Managed WordPress can run on Shared, VPS or dedicated and will cost and perform accordingly.
  • You get WordPress and nothing else.
  • The server, the customer service and everything else is optimized for WordPress.
  • Note: Some Shared services advertise their service as WordPress ready or having a pre-installed WordPress. This is not the same as a Managed WordPress account.

eCommerce Hosting

  • An eCommerce package typically consists of a store template with a products catalog, a shopping cart, payment services, marketing tools and basically everything you need to easily and quickly setup your own shopping site.
  • Note: All Shared hosting packages provide easy installation of several eCommerce systems through their Control Panel. This does not make them eCommerce accounts.

Cloud

  • Cloud Hosting refers to complex hosting services running in the cloud such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google cloud and several other companies. Cloud hosting is usually an overkill for a small or medium website in terms of learning curve and setup complexities. This type of service is more oriented towards power users with more complex needs.

What We Compared

Here are the main factors to consider when choosing a hosting service

Availability

Availability is the percentage of time your site is up and running. A 99.99% availability means an average downtime of 8 seconds per day. A 99.9% availability means an average of 86 seconds of downtime per day. In actuality downtime is not an average. It manifests as long periods of uptime and once in a while a short downtime or a long outage. For a very busy site it could mean revenue loss, but for smaller sites, blogs and anyone on a shared program, the difference in up-time between hosts is negligible and in any case the top 10 sites are all better than 99.9% so for many users this should not be a deciding factor. Bear in mind that on shared hosting the activities of other websites on the same server may influence your website, putting you at risk of bugs, crashes and therefore downtime. So by choosing shared hosting you expose yourself to higher risk of downtime anyhow.

Latency

Latency is the time interval between clicking a link on your site and getting that page. Latency is comprised of many factors: The size of your web pages, whether your site is optimized for lazy loading of images and java scripts, a caching mechanism, the number of CPU cores and their strength, disk speed (SSD vs. IDE), network speed and load, geolocation of your server, the presence of a Content Delivery System (CDN), the load caused by other sites if you are on shared hosting, and other factors. So hosting reviews that give a single latency score to all packages of a host are too general and your latency will vary depending on your package.

Bandwidth & Storage

bandwidth and storage are package dependent. Many shared packages specify ‘unmetered’ or ‘unlimited’ bandwidth and storage but that always mean ‘unlimited within reason’ which means there is a boundary but they won’t tell you what it is. Instead, if you go over the boundary they will not limit you, instead they will contact you and ask you to upgrade your plan.

Feature Set

bandwidth and storage are package dependent.

Ease Of Use

Ease of use is important if you plan to manage your site on your own. It is less important if you have a pro managing it for you,

Customer Service Quality

Service quality is comprised of:

  • Available support channels: phone, chat, email, tickets.
  • Availability. 24/7/365 or less?
  • Response time to your calls.
  • Quality and knowledge level of service personnel.
  • Will they only answer questions or go the extra mile and solve the problem.
We are conducting a thorough ‘service quality survey’ measuring all the parameters above and will publish the results once done.

Price

Last but not least, price is often the main factor that differentiates relatively similar offerings.
Price can be misleading because renewals and upgrades are usually much more expensive than the new-customer promotions and it’s hard to compare apples to apples between the different services.
So we did the hard work for you and prepared tables that show you the bang for your buck comparing apples to apples, emphasising long term cost.
Be advised that most host give a special discount for your first billing cycle regardless of its duration, be it one month or three years, so if you know you are in it for the long haul, always opt for the 3 year deal. You’ll never get such a sweet price again.

The Companies we Compared

We find these to be some of the most important and popular hosts.

RAM

The amount of run-time memory in GB allocated to your site. More means faster site.

Traffic

Amount of monthly traffic your site can provide.

Most hosts offer 1 free domain purchase with any yearly plan.

emails

Number of email accounts you can have with your account.

Databases

Number of databases you may have with your account.

Security

Extra security against malicious hackers and security threats.

Backup

Low tier accounts usually provide 1 weekly backup. If you make many changes and updates to your site this might not be enough and will cost more.

SEO Tools

Support

The customer service quality as measured by available support channels, availability, response time and support quality.

SSL

Secure Socket Layer is what you need to get the green lock icon on the address line which makes your visitors feel secure. Most sites have one and so should you. Most hosts offer free basic SSL which is enough only for simple sites so be prepared to pay for this.

Dedicated IP

You will need a dedicated IP (e.g. 123.54.87.223) for eCommerce and most anything except for blogs and simple sites. You definitely need it for a properly working SSL so take this expanse into account.

Money Back

Length of the money back period in days.

VPS Hosting

VPS BCDR Index

The 4 major elements that determine the strength and quality of your VPS and differentiate one VPS plan from another are Bandwidth, CPU Cores, Disk Storage and RAM memory.
We defined a standard unit that represents the combined cost of Bandwidth, CPU, Disk and RAM.
The BCDR Index shows the cost of BW, CPU, Disk and RAM in each VPS plan.

Important Note
cPanel - cPanel is the most popular control panel for web hosting. It is part of every Shared hosting plan and most of the mentioned VPS plans include a cPanel for free except for Hostinger, Interserver and DreamHost. Dream host offers a proprietary control panel. On Hostinger and Interserver you can purchase a single cPanel independently for $15/mo'. However, if you have more then one VPS the cPanel price drops drastically, 5 licenses for $20/mo' and 30 licenses for $30/mo'.
To make your life easier we integrated the cost of a single cPanel license to the prices of Hostinger and Interserver plans. in this table
